Black Mother’s Matter
Remembering Sonya Massey
With profound sadness and a deep sense of injustice, we at Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support mourn the tragic loss of a fellow mother, Sonya Massey. Her life was taken from us through an act of violence that should never have happened, and her absence is a heavy blow to all who knew her and to the community she served.
Sonya was a vibrant and integral part of the Black community, and her untimely death at the hands of law enforcement highlights the urgent need for change and the need for greater equity and respect. At Pea Pod Nutrition and Lactation Support, we are deeply committed to prioritizing the needs of Black communities and Black mothers, recognizing the unique challenges they face and the systemic barriers that impact their well-being.
Our mission is to empower families through evidence-based nutrition and lactation education, counseling, and support, with a special focus on reducing the risk and prevalence of lifestyle-related chronic diseases within Georgia’s Black communities. We are dedicated to addressing disparities and ensuring that every mother, every child, and every family has access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
Sonya’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the importance of our work. In honoring her memory, we renew our commitment to advocating for justice, equity, and comprehensive support for Black families. We strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who are often underserved and to build a future where every individual is valued and supported.
Our thoughts are with Sonya’s loved ones, especially her son, during this difficult time, and we pledge to continue our mission with renewed vigor and a steadfast dedication to the values she embodied.
