Advocating for Georgia's Mothers

The Georgia Alliance for Maternal Health is committed to eliminating preventable maternal deaths and improving maternal health outcomes across the state of Georgia. To achieve this, the Alliance focuses on the following key aims:

  • Reducing Maternal Mortality: Striving to eliminate preventable maternal deaths in Georgia by addressing the root causes and disparities contributing to these tragic outcomes.

  • Promoting Equitable Maternal Care: Ensuring all Georgia mothers, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or geographic location, have access to high-quality, equitable maternal care throughout the perinatal period (before, during, and after pregnancy).

  • Advocating for Policy Change: Working to advance evidence-based policies at the state level that strengthen access to comprehensive maternal care, including:

    • Expanding access to prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care: Advocating for policies that improve affordability and availability of essential maternal health services.

    • Addressing social determinants of health: Promoting policies that tackle systemic factors like poverty, housing instability, food insecurity, and transportation barriers that impact maternal well-being.

    • Improving data collection and reporting: Supporting initiatives to enhance data collection and analysis to better understand maternal mortality trends and inform targeted interventions.

  • Collaborating with Stakeholders: Building partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and policymakers to create a unified front in advocating for improved maternal health outcomes.

  • Raising Awareness: Educating the public and policymakers about the importance of maternal health and the urgent need for policy changes to address the maternal mortality crisis.

  • Promoting Preventative Health Measures: Championing policies and programs that encourage preventative care and healthy behaviors before, during, and after pregnancy to improve maternal health outcomes.

Maternal Health Education Act

The Maternal Health Education Act is the inaugural bill proposed by the Georgia Alliance for Maternal Health.

If passed, this legislation mandates that all licensed physicians in the state of Georgia complete at least one hour of continuing medical education (CME) specifically focused on maternal health topics. These topics would include:

  • Maternal mortality and morbidity: Recognizing risk factors, identifying disparities, and implementing evidence-based interventions.

  • Mental health: Recognizing and addressing maternal mental health conditions, including postpartum depression and anxiety.

  • Disparities in maternal health: Understanding the unique health challenges faced by Black women, women of color, and other marginalized populations.
